A Day At the Frist

My husband and I decided to visit the Frist Center for the Visual Arts and view the "Societe Anonyme: Modernism for America" exhibit.  This is a very impressive exhibit on loan from Yale University Art Gallery and features the works of Marcel Duchamp, Piet Mondrian, Andrew Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, and other important artists of the period. Their works were avant garde in the first half of the 20th century, and still look fresh and contemporary in 2007.

We are looking forward to taking our grandchildren to the Martin ArtQuest room where they can explore their own creativity.  This should be a fun experience for them and us.

We are fortunate to have a world class museum such as The Frist in Nashville. It certainly enriches our lives. Thank you to the Frist family and all its supporters for this treasure.

Battle of Franklin Anniversary

Today, November 30, 2007, is the 143rd Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin--called "The Gettysburg of the West" and "the bloodiest hours of the American Civil War."  The causalities were: 2500 Federal and 7000 Confederate troops.  For all practical purposes this five hour battle decimated the Army of Tennessee.

"(Franklin) is the blackest page in the history of the War of the Lost Cause.  It was the bloodiest battle of modern times in any war.  It was the finishing stroke to the Independence of the Southern Confederacy. I was there. I saw it."

In commemoration of this anniversary, the Carter House, which served as a hospital after the battle and is a non-profit museum and interpretive center, will host its annual fundraiser with a Christmas Candlelight Tour featuring 11 tour stops.

WHEN: Dec.1-2, 5pm-9pm

TICKETS:  $20 or $18 in advance, $15 for ages 65 or older, $10 for ages 6-12, ages 5 and under admitted free.
